Online gaming is something that has become very popular lately, as it allows peopel to communicate with eachother, and to pass times of boredom, as playing computer games can be enjoyable. Everyone enjoys different genres however, such as first person shooters(FPS), real time strategy(RTS), Roleplaying games(RPG), racing, action, family/indie, and more. Each genre has specific characteristics that make a game fit into that genre, for example; first person shooters will involve playing from a first person view, and the gameplay will contain guns in possibly a deathmatch vs other players. To make a game specific to a genre you need to first understand the characteristics within that genre which you need to implement.
The nice thing about online mini-games/flash games is that the genre is less specific, as the games themselves are all part of a niche genre, as they are not mainsteam games but are published on websites, as apps in the iTunes store, games on your mobile phone, games on facebook. The games on these locations are what would be classed as online mini games, as you won't end up playing them as competitively or for as long as games such as Call of Duty, Team fortress 2 or Trackmania. The intention is that these games will be a short burst of fun, rather than playing several hundred hours on them, simply because you aren't able to socialise with friends so much on them, and there isn't as much to do in comparison to mainstream games.
